Mysterious Risso’s dolphins are finally revealing their secrets in the Balearic Islands

Not long ago, Risso’s dolphins were one of the least understood cetaceans in the Mediterranean. But thanks to the work of researchers like Alexander Sánchez Jones from the Alnitak Research Institute, that’s changing. Through satellite tagging and field studies in the Balearic Islands, we’re beginning to understand their behavior, migration patterns, and the threats they face—from underwater noise and plastic pollution to entanglement in fishing gear. These insights are a game-changer for marine conservation efforts in the region.
