Projects We Fund

Since 2021, we’ve donated €500,000 to 35 initiatives, each contributing in their own unique way to restoring ocean health.
How we choose our grantees:
With guidance from our Scientific Advisory Board, we fund projects that deliver measurable, lasting impact—and work together as part of a bigger recovery plan. Inspired by Carlos Duarte’s research “Rebuilding Marine Life” (published in Nature in 2020), we prioritise initiatives aligned with six key ocean health recovery strategies:
Protect Species
Harvest Wisely
Protect Spaces
Restore Habitats
Reduce Pollution
Mitigate Climate Change
Raising Awareness About Packaging as Underwater Litter
Learn about the issues and damage that packaging pollution causes to ocean wildlife and ecosystems. Oceana is a partner whose work and efforts strongly represent Ocean Born foundation’s goals and objectives and supporting them is extremely valuable.
No IFs or BUTTs
Discover Ocean Beer’s campaign against cigarette butt pollution and how you can contribute to keep the oceans cleaner!
Making the World’s First Blue Carbon Documentary
Make Waves is a media company who has produced projects such as Blue Carbon, a documentary that dives into the promise and potential of the ocean in the face of global warming
Documenting Ocean Health along Iberian Coast - La España Azul
Follow the incredible story of Nacho Dean, extreme traveller and climate change spokesperson’s new project, España Azul. In this project Nacho Dean conducts research to better understand and denounce microplastics and harm done to the Iberian seas.
Reducing Black Carbon emissions in Arctic Shipping
The Arctic Sea is at constant risk of melting ice caps, destruction of wildlife habitat and reduction int he functioning of its ecosystem. Cleann Arctic Alliance has other plans, to reduce black carbon entrance in the Arctic Sea.
Banning Heavy Fuel Oils from EU Ports
Ocean Born Foundation grants support to Clean Arctic Alliance’s project Sea’s at Risk, a project whose objective is to ban black carbon from entering EU ports which could have the strongest change on black carbon emissions globally.
Marine Protected Areas & Coral Regeneration
Ocean Born Foundation is currently raising funds through the sales of Ocean Beer in France to support Blue Alliance, an organisation developing and managing large-scale Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in some of the most biodiverse places on earth to ensure their long-term conservation.
Amplifying Ocean Storyteller Voices
Our partner, Ocean Culture Life brings Ocean Storytellers and Ocean Guardians together to give a voice to the ocean. Their annual Storyteller Grant empowers young creatives to tell stories and fund projects that highlight the beauty of our ocean, its people, and the organisations that are working tirelessly to protect it.
Banning bottom-trawling in Spanish MPAs with Oceana
To push for a ban on bottom trawling, we supported Oceana's efforts around this in Spain and funded the production of a fact sheet with data analysis on fisheries inside MPAs, accompanied by case studies.
Protecting Risso's dolphins and Loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean with Alnitak
We are proud to fund Alnitak’s research conducted under the MEDTOP program, contributing to one of Europe’s largest datasets for cetacean and marine turtle conservation.
Harnessing the Power of Giant Kelp
This project involves studying a robust kelp forest in Namibia to understand the ambient factors that determine growth, carbon sequestration, nutrient composition and water filtration capacity of the plants. Such data could eventually lead to the first ever offshore kelp cultivation methodology and certification standards for kelp-based blue carbon credits.
Protecting sperm whale nursing area in Menorca with MPA status
Together with Menorca Preservation, we funded research carried out by Tursiops Marine Research on an area north of Menorc
