Ocean Beer x The Ocean Race: Sailing for Seaweed Restoration
In 2023, Ocean Born Foundation partnered with The Ocean Race, one of the world’s most prestigious offshore regatta. Beyond the challenge of sailing, the race actively contributed to fighting climate change, serving as a platform for data collection, ocean health monitoring, and action against marine pollution.
As part of the partnership, Ocean Beer was served as the official beer for sailors, teams, and partners at the Grand Finale in Genoa. All profits from sales were donated to Outdoor Portofino to restore Cystoseira (Ericaria amentacea) seaweed forests in the Portofino Marine Protected Area, located near the regatta finish line. These forests are essential for biodiversity, blue carbon storage, and coastal resilience, yet had suffered severe decline due to human activity and climate change.
The project funded combined marine restoration and citizen science by engaging outdoor enthusiasts—kayakers, SUP paddlers, snorkelers, and divers—in monitoring, transplanting, and protecting juvenile seaweed.
Volunteers received training on marine ecosystems, threats, and restoration techniques, collaborating with research institutions to gather critical ecological data. This hands-on approach supported ecosystem recovery and strengthened ocean literacy, fostering a deeper connection between people and the sea.
Additionally, part of the funds supported educational outreach in local schools, helping future custodians of the Mediterranean understand the vital role of seaweed forests in ocean health.
