Beach clean-ups across the Canary Islands with Canary Green 🇮🇨
A coastline under pressure
The Canary Islands are surrounded by some of the Atlantic's most important marine ecosystems, but their coastlines face growing pressure from plastic pollution and marine litter — some generated locally, much of it drifting in from across the ocean via the Canary Current (coming from all the way from Europe, the US and even Australia!). Waste that piles up on beaches doesn't stay there for long: it eventually makes its way back into the sea, where it threatens marine life and degrades fragile coastal habitats.
Meet Canary Green
Canary Green is a local environmental organisation working to protect the archipelago's coastline and inspire action across its communities. Alongside their storytelling and education work, they run regular beach clean-ups across the islands: bringing together residents, visitors, businesses and volunteers to take practical action against marine pollution.
Our partnership
Since 2024, Ocean Beer has been a regular partner of Canary Green's clean-ups, supporting dozens of their events across the islands by providing beers to reward volunteers at the end of each clean-up. It's a small gesture, but one that reflects what we care about: bringing people together around the ocean, and making conservation a shared, tangible experience.
A few of the recent clean-ups we've been part of:
22 August 2026 — Playa Grande, Poris de Abona. Volunteers pulled a heavy load of microplastics and international debris from the shore, including bottles and packaging from as far as Australia, the United States and Denmark!
25 July 2026 — Playa de Ajabo, Callao Salvaje. A tough clean-up on a beach known for its heavy trash accumulation.
30 May 2026 — Playa Los Enojados. A Día de Canarias clean-up to mark the islands' national day with hands-on action.
29 November 2025 — Playa Grande, Poris de Abona. 60 volunteers removed a striking 245 kg of waste in just a few hours.
These clean-ups do more than clear a stretch of sand. They create opportunities for people to connect with their local environment, understand the pressures facing the islands' marine ecosystems, and become part of a community taking action for the ocean.
