A Milestone for the Ocean: 3.4 Million Hectares of Reef Now Protected - Why this matter?
Coral reefs are among the most important ecosystems on Earth. Although they cover less than one percent of the ocean floor, they support around a quarter of all marine life. Reefs provide shelter for fish, sea turtles, sharks, and countless other species, while also supporting countless people around the world. Today, coral reefs are disappearing at an alarming rate. The biggest threat is climate change. Rising ocean temperatures cause coral bleaching, a process where corals expel the algae that give them colour and energy. Without this relationship, corals weaken and can eventually die. Mass bleaching events are now affecting reefs across the world, including the Great Barrier Reef and scientists estimate that the world has lost around 50% of its coral reefs since the 1950s.
Other threats are making the crisis even worse. Ocean acidification weakens coral structures, while pollution, plastic waste, overfishing, and destructive coastal development damage reef ecosystems that can take decades to recover.
The loss of coral reefs affects far more than marine life. Reefs protect coastlines from storms and erosion, support local economies through tourism, and provide food security for coastal communities. Without healthy reefs, many communities become more vulnerable to climate impacts and economic instability.
Here are 5 ways to support corals:
Reducing carbon emissions is the most important long term solution. Slowing climate change can help stabilise ocean temperatures and give reefs a chance to recover.
Protecting marine areas and enforcing sustainable fishing practices can restore biodiversity and strengthen reef ecosystems naturally.
Reducing plastic pollution and improving waste management prevents harmful materials and chemicals from entering the ocean.
Supporting coral restoration projects, including coral nurseries and reef regeneration programs, helps damaged ecosystems recover faster.
Choosing responsible tourism and supporting ocean conscious businesses encourages industries to protect marine environments instead of exploiting them.
At Ocean Beer, the mission goes far beyond creating a beverage. Ocean Beer was built to celebrate the ocean while helping protect it through sustainability, storytelling, and community driven impact. As marine ecosystems face growing threats from climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, Ocean Beer aims to inspire more people to reconnect with nature and support solutions that protect our seas for future generations. By combining ocean culture with environmental awareness, Ocean Beer hopes to create a lifestyle movement centered around regeneration, adventure, and positive action.
A key part of this vision is Ocean Beer’s partnership with Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas who reached an important milestone: they are now protecting 1.5% of the world’s coral reefs, covering 3.4 million hectares across Indonesia, the Philippines, and Zanzibar. All their MPAs actively support reef recovery and biodiversity restoration. The long term goal is to scale this impact to 9 million hectares by 2030, equal to 5% of the world’s coral reefs, helping improve food security and livelihoods for around half a million coastal community members.
This incredible milestone is proof that large scale ocean regeneration is possible when science, communities, and partners work together to protect marine biodiversity and restore balance between people and nature!
