Ocean Beer launches in Germany: A beer designed to protect the ocean

Ocean Beer, a purpose-driven beer brand that donates 100% of its profits to ocean conservation, has officially launched in Germany. The beer is now available online for delivery across Germany, with plans to expand rapidly into bars, restaurants and hotels as well as supermarkets across the country.

Ocean Beer aims to makes it easy for everyone to take meaningful action for the ocean through their everyday purchasing choices.

Addressing one of the most underfunded environmental challenges

The ocean plays a critical role in sustaining all life on Earth. It produces more than 50% of our planet’s oxygen, regulates the global climate, absorbs over 90% of excess heat generated by human activities, and supports billions of people through food systems and livelihoods.

Despite its importance, less than 3% of the ocean is effectively protected and scientists estimate that a funding gap of roughly €130 billion per year is missing to be able to restore the ocean back to health, making marine conservation one of the most underfunded Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations. Ocean Beer was created as an innovative, long-term funding model to help close this gap.

A simple model: 100% of profits for ocean protection

Ocean Beer operates on a straightforward principle: all profits generated by the brand are donated to projects that restore ocean health.

What makes the model unique is its ownership structure. The Ocean Beer brand is owned by Ocean Born Foundation, an ANBI-certified non-profit organisation dedicated to accelerating ocean conservation and restoration. This structure ensures that 100% of the profits generated by Ocean Beer are directed toward environmental action.

By combining a consumer brand with a non-profit ownership model, Ocean Beer aims to create a scalable and continuous funding mechanism for marine protection.

Since its launch in 2021, Ocean Beer has already contributed more than €500,000 to marine conservation and restoration initiatives worldwide.

Measurable environmental impact

Each Ocean Beer sold contributes directly to ocean protection.

Profits are generated by the brands are allocated across two complementary funding streams:

1. Marine Protected Areas (50%)

Half of the profits support the development and management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), one of the most effective science-based tools for restoring marine ecosystems.

Through a partnership with the non-profit Blue Alliance, each Ocean Beer bottle sold protects 210 m² of ocean for one year in some of the world’s most biodiverse and threatened marine regions. The ecological recovery of these areas is monitored and independently evaluated by experts from the CNRS Foundation.

2. Local conservation projects (50%)

The remaining 50% supports local marine conservation initiatives in each country where Ocean Beer is brewed and sold.

Projects are selected by an independent Scientific Advisory Board composed of ocean scientists, based on their scientific relevance and measurable impact on marine ecosystems.

Following the launch of Ocean Beer in Germany in 2026, the first selection of German conservation projects will take place at the end of the year.
